Cups of Courage

Cancer Support Community VVSB is looking for breast cancer survivors to share their stories through our annual Cups of Courage Workshop. Let your creativity flow! All supplies will be provided for participants to decorate bras in whatever style illustrates their individual journey through breast cancer. Completed bras will be on display at at our annual Paint The Town Pink Fundraising Event on October 1st at The Oaks Mall, along with each participant’s photograph and story. Burn Prevention for Seniors

Senior Concerns, in partnership with the Grossman Burn Center and the Grossman Burn Foundation, will present a community seminar titled “Burn Prevention for Seniors.” This informative seminar, led by Barbara Rook, RN, and Helena San Marco, LVN, both with the Grossman Burn Center, will focus on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree burns, fire safety, burn prevention, emergency burn treatment and first aid. The LGBT Aging Coalition of Ventura Presents Screening of Documentary “Gen Silent”

The LGBT Aging Coalition of Ventura invites the community to attend a free screening of the documentary “Gen Silent,” followed by an opportunity for questions and discussion. “Gen Silent” is a critically acclaimed documentary from filmmaker Stu Maddux that asks six LGBT seniors if they will hide their friends and/or their spouses their entire lives in order to survive in the care system. Their surprising decisions are captured through intimate access to their day-to-day lives over the course of a year. Unlike any film before, Gen Silent startlingly discovers how oppression in the years before Stonewall now affects older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people with fear and isolation. The Innovative Vision of Poet Dana Gioia: American Poetry and Public Life

Internationally acclaimed poet and literature professor Dana Gioia has championed poetry throughout his career. During his recent term as California Poet Laureate, he brought his own poetry and the work of established and emerging poets to every county in the state. He will read from and illuminate his award-winning poetry and discuss how community engagement in poetry and all the arts foster a vibrant public sphere. Gioia holds the Judge Widney Chair of Poetry and Public Culture at the University of Southern California. The Cal Lutheran Choir, conducted by Wyant Morton, will perform a musical setting of Gioia’s poem “Prayer” composed by Morten Lauridsen.

In its first major Veterans Day Celebration, Cal Lutheran honors members of the university community for their service to country. There will be a military color guard and music. The keynote speaker, Rear Adm. Eugene Fussell, served in the U.S. Navy for almost four decades before retiring in 1998. The celebration will include food trucks offering complimentary lunch to the first 150 guests. Free event. Back by popular demand, a countywide clothing swap returns to the gallery! Bring in your lightly used clothes and pick out something from our selection. You can bring in as much or as little clothing as you like and take away as many pieces as you like. Please only bring in clothing that still has life in it. Clothing categories include women’s, men’s and children’s. Unclaimed articles will remain in the gallery until Nov. 21 and then donated to Cal Lutheran’s professional development program and James Storehouse, a Thousand Oaks nonprofit that assists young people aging out of foster care. From 4:30 to 6 p.m., “HIV/AIDS 101,” a sexual health education session, will provide new medical information as well as global, national and local updates. At 6 p.m., a speaker living with HIV/AIDS will share his personal health story and experiences as an advocate and activist. The event concludes with a nondenominational candlelight vigil beginning at about 7 p.m. The vigil is an act of commitment: to stand with others in loss, against injustice and connected in hope.

Santa's Village and Christmas Parade

The parade, with the theme of 'A Cosmic Christmas' starts at 10:00 and travels along Las Posas Rd., starting at Temple Ave., turning left onto Carmen Dr. and ending at the Community Center. Enjoy watching hundreds of parade entries like bands, floats, autos, horses and Santa himself riding in his sleigh. Santa's Village is open from 9:00 - 2:00. With Holiday Shopping, Food, Live Music, Inflatable Attractions, Visits With Santa all for FREE.

Star Party

Join us for a tour of the night sky! Use our telescopes—including the 20-inch state-of-the-art telescope in the Palmer Observatory—to get a close-up view of planets, galaxies, nebulae and much more while astronomers from the Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit share cosmic knowledge and answer your questions. Star Parties occur on the second Saturday of each month, from dusk until 10:00 PM, weather permitting. Admission is FREE.
